Did you know that people in the Pacific Northwest of the United States actually pay about 1/2 of the amount for electricity than people on the East Coast? That's due to the fact that hydroelectric power is so clean and abundant. The Grand Coulee Dam is the largest hydroelectric plant in the North America and generates electricity by harnassing the power of 6.2 trillion gallons of water.
There are many different ways to conserve energy and resources right in your own home, even if you don't use hydroelectric power. It's no coincidence that "green" and "frugal" are often used interchangeably. Reduce your waste by making the most of what you (or, in some cases, others) already have. You can give new life to old items you were thinking about throwing out, cut down on your plastic bag use, or even save money and the environment at the same time.
Why should eco-awareness be limited to one day? We all know how to sort our paper and plastic. Now it's time to take recycling to the next level. From shopping for vintage clothes to extending the life of household items to turning leftovers into delicious new dishes, iVillage has tips and ideas to help you recycle all aspects of your life.
