From NBC's Today show on Thursday May 15, 2008
Nutritionist Ellie Krieger shows delicious and low-calorie versions of cheeseburgers, coleslaw, peach pie and more.
Watch the segment from TODAY As we enter the summer season, it's about time to fire up the grill again. We all know that barbecues are bad for your diet what with all the high-fat and high-calorie food being thrown onto the grill, but believe it or not, there are healthy alternatives to the typical burgers and dogs and sausages. Cut the fat but not the flavor!
Grilling is actually a low-fat way to prepare food, but it's what you put on the grill that makes a difference, in terms of calories. Burgers are the typical barbecue fare, as are steaks and sausages, but grilled cod is an option, as well as things like turkey burgers, or grilled vegetables. Here are some more mouthwatering options for the grill.
There's nothing wrong with splurging every once in a while, but it is also worth your time to take a look at the calorie counts of the foods you are eating and make intelligent choices based on that information. You can learn the the best ways to "spend" 500 calories, for example. With a little creativity, you can include your favorite foods in your diet, and not have that horribly deprived feeling which can so often derail you from your weight loss goals. You can fill up your plate and still lose weight!
